- What stabilizer should I use on cotton Fabric? Floriani Heat N Stay Tearaway, this is a fusible tearaway, fusing stops the fabric grain from shifting and puckering.
- Why does my embroidery separate? The most common cause is not enough stabilizers, Tearaway gets it name because it tears away, the needle has simply punched it away. The Key to perfect embroidery is Iron on your tearaway to support the grain of the fabric then hoop and simply float an additional piece under your hoop.
- How do I embroider a towel? It is important never to hoop a towel as it stretches our hoops, the simply way to embroider a towel is Hoop some Wet N Stick in your hoop apply small amount of water to it so it becomes tacky, simply position your towel on it. Use a topper of your choice and stitch out your embroidery, when finished turn over to the wrong side apply a little water to reactivate and your backing will simply tearaway.
- What if I am using metallic thread? A metafil needle is needed for metallic thread as this has a larger eye, allowing the thread to flow through without shredding.
- What Needle should I use for embroidery? Most needle manufacturers produce an Embroidery needle with a universal point (not sharp, not ball) which has a Teflon coated eye. This prevents the thread from heating up and shredding during embroidery. Sizes range from 10/70 to 14/90
- My bobbin thread keeps showing? Use a well wound bobbin, not wrapped too tight and certainly not a messy loose bobbin. Make sure your bobbin case is clean and the bobbin is inserted correctly. If the bobbin is inserted upside down, the machine will not stitch correctly.
- What do I use for applique? We have a wonderful product called Appli-Kay Wonder simply iron onto the wrong side of your fabric, cut around your shape, remove backing paper revealing a tacky substance that can be repositioned. When the desired position is found, simply iron to secure permanently then stitch as desired. Appli-Kay Wonder is ideal for patchwork and quilting as well as machine embroidery applique designs.
- Do I need to use a topper on a towel? Using a topper when embroidering a towel is important to ensure the pile does not come through the stitching. Floriani's Heat N Gone is a permanent topper that does not wash away, preventing loops from coming through your beautiful embroidery, permanently. Simply float over the embroidery field, stitch your embroidery and tear away, then iron away any excess around edge of embroidery.
- How do I embroidery Jeans? Simply unpick the inside seam of the Jeans legs, use Floriani Perfect Stick (this is a pressure sensitive adhesive hoop the Perfectstick, remove the paper to reveal the adhesive) Place Jeans in the desired position for embroidery. When finished tear away the Perfect Stick then sew your seams back up and enjoy your newly embroidered Jeans.
- Why can't I use Tearaway on stretchy fabric? Because every time the needle goes through tearaway it is being needle punched out, this allows the fabric to stretch. For perfect embroidery on stretch fabrics such as rugby, polar fleece or jersey you need to stop the stretch. Floriani No Show Nylon Mesh is a lightweight stabilizer that will leave your stretch fabrics soft and flexible without the use of a heavy cutaway. Simply iron in the desired embroidery field, hoop your fabric and embroider.
- How do I stop the embroidery from being scratchy when wearing it? Simply iron on a small piece of Dream Weave over the back of your embroidery, this has a permanent adhesive that will stay on even after washing. Dream Weave is ideal for babies’ garments as it is lightweight to eliminate shadowing.
- How do I hoop velvet without hoop burning it? Simply hoop Floriani’s Perfectstick then score the paper and peel away to reveal the pressure sensitive adhesive (this is not gum based and will not make the needle sticky) place your velvet on top in the desired position, when finished it will simply tearaway. Remember to use a topper on velvet, this eliminates the pile from coming through the embroidery, Heat N Gone is ideal for this.

- Have good lighting in your sewing room. Natural lighting is better when selecting your thread colours.
- If time allows, try to wash the garment or fabric you wish to embroider, Prepping a garment or fabric will help take care of any shrinkage that may occur.
- Always use a well wound bobbin, with good quality thread.
- Having the necessary tools for embroidery is the key to success. Sharp snips and scissors, fresh marking pens and pencils, good quality thread and colour choices, don't sacrifice your creative recipe by using less than perfect ingredients.
- Always remember the size and density of the design will affect the weight and quantity of stabilizer you should use.
- Garment and fabric choice will dictate what type of needle to use for the embroidery, take the time to look at all factors to achieve perfect embroidery.
- If you are in doubt about an embroidery design – sew a test sample, this can later be made into a cushion or a gift, it is never a waste if it enables you to achieve perfect embroidery.
- Make sure your embroidery thread is in a position to feed through the machine freely. If the machine has to pull the thread from the spool it will create extra drag and distort the tension.
- For Metallic threads try to position the thread to feed vertically. Using a thread stand behind your machine is the ideal solution for all types of embroidery threads. Using this system creates less twist and will minimize thread breakage.
- When Hooping, try to achieve tight as a drum tension on the fabric or garment.
- Have a proper hooping area, clutter forces you to hoop on your lap or ironing board which results in less than perfect tension on your fabric or garment.
- Most importantly enjoy and don't be afraid to try new things.
